The flight to Townsville had been mostly silent. As Nick shut down the Blackhawk, Ryan watched the police leave with the body. He still couldn’t accept it was Bill. His whole being fought the idea as his emotions threatened to overwhelm him. He climbed out of the cockpit and slammed the door. His feet felt like lead weights as he followed Jarred and Nick to a waiting Jeep. They were driven to the officers’ mess where the base commander had organized a late dinner for them. Ryan hadn’t eaten since lunch with Safiya on Morcago Ledge, but he couldn’t stomach the thought of food. Transporting the body to the mainland had killed his appetite.

Jarred clamped his hand on Ryan’s shoulder. “I’ve been invited to dine with the base commander. Make sure you eat something.”

“Will do.” Ryan sat opposite Nick while they were served a roast dinner. He tried a mouthful, but struggled to swallow it. All day he’d prayed Bill would show up with some outrageous excuse for missing in action. Now he couldn’t block the memory of Bill’s choked apology at the pub. Ryan laid down his knife and fork. Losing the only adult who’d given a fuck twelve years ago ripped his soul apart. Bill had stood by him when his own parents couldn’t stand the sight of him. He’d mentored Ryan for years. He’d been more a father than great uncle. For once it seemed Frankie Ellis was wrong. With a choked sob, Ryan pushed back his chair and dropped his head into his hands, his upper body shaking as grief consumed him.

A hand clamped his shoulder and held firm. “Let it all out, mate. There’s nobody here but us.” Nick’s words gave him small comfort. “You need to grieve, or you’ll explode. I don’t know how you’ve held it together so long.”

Ryan grabbed a serviette and wiped his nose. “Who the fuck blew up Bill’s boatshed? Did they know he was inside?”

“I don’t know, mate, but we’ll find them. None of us will rest until we find Bill’s killer.”

“Thanks.” Ryan cleared his throat and sat up straighter. “If the explosion is tied up with a rumored treasure, then it’s time I settled a few scores.”
